Topeka First UMC News, Info., & Events

Greetings Topeka First UMC,

I hope that you are having a great week!

I wanted to start today by saying thank you to everyone who made Steve Eubank's 30 year celebration so special.

Thank you to:
-Pastor Emeritus Mike Chamberlain for the vision and planning for the whole event.
-Dr. Mark Lucas for leading the choir
-George Escobar for organizing and leading practice with the choir
-Shawna Heien, staff, and volunteers for organizing lunch
-All the teams, ministries, and individuals in the church who made center pieces
-The Tempero-Sandall endowment that sponsored the event and provided financial support

Please find a note from Steve Eubank below. Kyle has made a video of all the pictures taken that day with the new anthem singing in the background and also another video of the choir singing the new anthem.

Coming up on Sunday we are beginning a new sermon series named, “Look What God Can Do.” Each week we will see how God is moving and working through us as part of the Kingdom of God. The themes for this series include:

October 4: Look What God Can Do Through The Table
October 11: Look What God Can Do Through You
October 18: Look What God Can Do Through Us
October 25: Look What God Can Do When Life Is Scary

I’m really looking forward to Sunday as we celebrate World Communion Sunday. We are taking a break this year from our annual event at Evergy Plaza with the other downtown churches. On Sunday, I hope you will join us for worship as we celebrate Holy Communion together with all Christians around the world!

October 25 will be our Fall-O-Ween event. We are going to mark this outreach event by having one service at 10:45 am all together! Right after church we will have lunch with chili and hot dogs, Trunk-Or-Treat in the parking lot, and Halloween games for everyone! I hope that you will plan on joining us  Please sign up to volunteer or support this outreach event with candy, food donations on the sheets at the Connections Desk in the Celebration Room.

I hope you will join us at 8:15, 9:30, or 10:45! The 9:30 am & 10:45 am services are also live-streamed.

See you Sunday,
Pastor Brad

Thank You Note from Steve Eubank

Church Family,

Words cannot express the gratitude I have for this last Sunday’s recognition. Music is such an essential element in our worship and to have it celebrated is such a tribute to our church. The singing of hymns, the bell choir, the praise team, the sanctuary choir, the organ all provide a witness to the glory of God. I am feeling so blessed to worship in a church where worship through music is so appreciated.

I want to especially thank the choir for their dedication and commitment. A huge thanks to Donna Osborne, George Escobar, Shawna Heien, and all of the church staff that made today so special. I have been blessed to work with a number of amazing supportive pastors that have served here at FUMC. Head paster, Brad Wheeler’s support to all the music programs is greatly appreciated and is a key part of the continued emphasis of music as worship.

Thirty years ago, I stepped in front of the choir for the first time. I followed the footsteps of numerous great choir directors. (Elbert Fly, Dr. Floyd Hedberg to name just two.) Sharing the chancel was someone who not only shared his love of singing in the choir but was and is an inspiration through the preaching of the gospel. Thank you, Mike Chamberlain, for not only being a great spiritual leader but for being my friend as well.

This Sunday is something I will never forget and I will always be grateful for Topeka First and what it means to me.

Thank you again and don’t forget the 7:00 pm rehearsal each Thursday.

See you there!
Steve

News from Kyle

Hello everyone! I’ve recently started posting short highlight videos from each week’s sermon to our Facebook page.  These clips are meant to help people outside our church get a feel for our messages and, hopefully, encourage them to watch the full service - and maybe even join us in person.

If you’re able to like and share these posts when you see them, it makes a big difference. The more engagement a post gets, the more likely it is to be shown to new people who haven’t connected with us yet. Your support helps our church reach beyond our walls in a simple but meaningful way.

Thank you for helping us spread the word!

-Kyle Newman, Director of Technology & Media

I'm helping to get people signed up to serve communion or had out bulletins! It'd be great if you'd help fill up the volunteer spots through the end of the year by signing up using our Sign-Up Genius link or stop by the Connection Desk on Sundays and see Shawna for help!

Thanks so much,

Pat
