In Memory of Bill Ervin

It is with sadness that we share the news of the death of beloved church member, Bill Ervin. We give thanks for his life and faith, and we ask that you keep his family and loved ones in your prayers. A copy of the obituary is included below.

William Lawrence (Bill) Ervin, passed away on June 26, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 4, 1939, to Lawrence and Euvela Ervin in Conway Springs, KS, and spent all the years of his youth in South Haven, KS, graduating high school in 1957. On June 5, 1959, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Kay Hunt in the South Haven Methodist Church.

Bill attended Washburn University for one year and later transferred to Southwestern College in Winfield, KS where he was a two-sport athlete in football and basketball and graduated with a degree in Business in 1961.

After completing his studies, Bill worked as an accountant for Texaco in Wichita, KS until Uncle Sam came calling. He entered the U.S. Air Force and spent basic training and officer training school at Lackland AFB, Texas and graduated as second lieutenant. Following technical training, he was assigned to active duty in Turkey where he finished his military years in 1965.

After his military service, Bill rejoined Texaco in Los Angeles, California and while there became a Certified Public Accountant. The family made their home in Topeka, Kansas in 1975, where he worked for the State of Kansas until retiring as the Chief of Municipal Accounting in 1997.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carol and his twin sister, Wilda. He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 67 years and his children and grandchildren: son Tim Ervin and daughter in law Jenny Mitchell, Wichita, KS (Dayne, George and Rachel), daughter Stacie and son in law Brian Prosser, Shawnee, KS (Colin and Bailee Prosser, Morgan and Owen) and extended family and friends.

Bill never met a file folder or cabinet he couldn’t fill, a problem he wouldn’t try to solve, or a person he couldn’t nickname or lovingly tease. He called his mother every Sunday, loved his family and his adventures with Marilyn. He always kept a curious mind, piles of various newspapers and magazines, and thick books -preferably historical fiction- and was a life long volunteer and helper of many.

He will be missed.
