The church has invited hundreds of children from Scott and State Street Elementary Schools to be a part of these weekends, so we will need all hands on deck. If you would like to volunteer, please see me soon. Everyone is welcome to help decorate on Saturday, June 23 between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Another way to show your support is to donate $30 to cover meals and t-shirts for a family from our community.

While Jeff is away on family vacation this week, I agreed to write to you about worship this Sunday, as well as summer plans for Children’s Discipleship.
I hope you were able to be with us this past week as we celebrated Promotion Sunday for children of all ages in our church and community. I know my family enjoyed the high-energy worship and celebration after.
This summer, children will attend worship with their families while Sunday School is on break. All church members should be on the lookout for visitors with children this summer, and make sure to tell them both about all our summer plans and about our school year routines, too.
At the 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services, we will offer a class called Worship Readiness during the sermons. This class will meet in the Celebration Room, or garden, and will be led by two adult volunteers. This class allows children aged 3 to 2nd graders to study the Bible, pray, and learn at a developmentally-appropriate level. Children will return at the end of each service.
We have exciting new worship spaces in both the Sanctuary and Chapel for our youngest members and visitors. These are called “Grace Spaces” and are an option for families with young children. There are tables and chairs with quiet activities in each of the spaces. Parents have space to sit close and help children as needed. It was a joy this past Sunday to watch how our young members were able to participate in worship at their own level! The nursery will be open during all worship services for children age 4 or younger. If you would like to learn more about these spaces, I would love to visit with you about it.
Our Vacation Bible School has been transformed into “Weekend Summer Adventures.” Families can join us for one or both of two fun weekends. On Friday, June 29 we will kick off Rolling River Rampage Vacation Bible School with dinner and activities for the whole family. On Saturday, June 30 children ages 3 to 5th grade will arrive for the day at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and opening worship, then spend the day in workshops. The weekend themes are based on Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” The day will end at 3 p.m. with happy children and tired volunteers. Everyone is invited to join us at church July 1 for a special worship experience and celebration.
We will host a second weekend adventure on July 27 and 28 with the same outdoor theme and the addition of exciting workshops like cooking, science, and sports! If you have not done so yet, please register your family. Pick up a registration form at the front desk to share with family and friends.
This week begins our “At the Movies” sermon series. Join us Friday, June 8 for a showing of Disney’s “The Jungle Book.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with pizza, popcorn, and snacks. Plan to be in church Sunday, June 10 for a sermon based on the movie from Austin Harris, Director of Worship Experience. This is a great chance to invite friends and neighbors of all ages for the movie night and worship on Sunday. Bring what you need to get comfortable!
As I look forward to my second year on staff and as a member of Topeka First United Methodist Church, I am grateful for the way I have seen God at work in this church and in Topeka. I am so glad to be on this journey with all of you!
Allison Brewer, Director of Children’s Discipleship
